The VVF has launched a fantastic new family website, where
you can check how your kids are shaping up.

Government statistics warn that nine out of 10 children could grow up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies – so helping them to make the right food choices could help prevent life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, type 2 diabetes and
heart disease from developing in later life.

www.veggiekids.org.uk is a fantastic new resource designed as a one-stop-information
shop for veggie kids and parents. It features everything you need to know about how kids can enjoy a happy and nutritious animal-free diet – and includes a facility to check whether or not your child is overweight.

Vegan & Vegetarian Foundation reassures after misguided press reports

Recent misguided press reports have suggested that teenagers and young adults were more likely to have suffered eating disorders if they had tried being vegetarian.

Interestingly, the researchers themselves did not rule out that those with eating disorders were attracted to the vegetarian diet simply because it allowed them to avoid certain foods. Rather than focusing on a vegetarian diet, they might as well have surveyed those with eating disorders to see how many had tried laxatives, eating only lettuce leaves, or even eating cardboard!

The VVF have written to the media to point out that scientific research continues to show that vegetarians live longer than meat eaters and have less chance of suffering from some of the UK’s biggest killer diseases, such as certain cancers, heart disease and diabetes.

Fish industry feeds public a red herring

The VVF tackled the British fish industry head on at the end of January over claims that fish is essential for health. A mermaid, wrapped in nets, lay on the steps of Fishmongers’ Hall by London Bridge at the start of a one day conference on Seafood and Health. The VVF’s message to delegates ‘Fish is not a Health Food’ was made loud and clear on banners.
