Dear Editor,
Government Urged to Face-Up to Real Cause of Obesity
New research by the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation (VVF) shows that meat and dairy are at the core of the world’s expanding obesity epidemic. The VVF’S Globesity report looks at the underlying causes of obesity and sensible solutions.
Despite two decades of advice to choose leaner cuts of meat and reduced fat dairy, meat is still the leading source of fat in the British diet – just ahead of cakes, biscuits and pastries. Dairy products take third place (National Diet and Nutrition Survey).
The American Cancer Society followed 75,000 people over a decade and found that one food was most associated with weight gain – meat. Despite this, the Department of Health’s new weight loss guide, Your Weight, Your Health, still promotes lean meat and reduced fat dairy – advice which clearly does nothing to combat obesity.
Scientific research shows that the effective way to curb obesity is to promote a plant-based diet – the bonus being that it also reduces the risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and some cancers.
So why does the government persist with a largely ineffective public health policy? In light of this new report, the VVF calls on Public Health Minister, Caroline Flint, to stop promoting meat and dairy products and endorse a far healthier and effective choice – a plant-based diet.
You can read the VVF’s Globesity report in full at http://www.vegetarian.org.uk or order a copy by calling 0117 970 5190.
Yours sincerely

In light of this new report, please ask Public Health Minister, Caroline Flint, what steps her Department plans to take to end the promotion of meat and dairy products in favour of a more effective and healthier plant-based diet.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
